2500-year-old Kariz underground city in Iran's Kish Island

The 2,500-year-old underground city of Kariz is the only old aqueduct at a depth of 16 meters below ground on Iran’s Persian Gulf Island of Kish. 

Encompassing an area of 10,000 square meters, the city was formerly an ancient underground canal and now is a tourist destination of the island.

Kariz enjoys a historical architecture, consisting of a roof with a diameter of 7 meters covered by shells and coral.

The water in the Kariz aqueduct is the result of seasonal rainfall, which is naturally purified by passing through several coral layers.

The soil obtained from Kariz during its restoration has various medicinal benefits and can be used in mud therapy.

Kariz aqueduct has cool weather in all seasons and travelers of the 2022 Qatar World Cup can visit this tourist attraction by stopping in Kish.
